Joseph Dougherty

Joe was trained as a scientific diver at UC Berkeley, and after graduating worked for several years as a scuba diving, wilderness survival, and first aid instructor. He then spent two years teaching biology and marine biology at the secondary level, and also earned a living as a professional writer and photographer before returning to school to study medicine. His work and personal travels have taken him around the globe, with a heavy emphasis on the neotropics. Joe has a keen interest in tropical ecology, and from his studies he developed an appreciation for orchids. These fascinating flowers figure prominently in his current photographic pursuits and are prominently featured in his image collection. Joe currently lives in Ann Arbor, MI, where he is a student at the University of Michigan Medical School. Joe's medical interests include wilderness and emergency medicine, trauma management, and emerging infectious diseases. Joe also contributes images to the CalPhotos online image database and to the University of Michigan's Animal Diversity Web electronic library.
