Sergio Antonio Vanin

Sergio Antonio Vanin was born in October 26th, 1948, in São Paulo (SP), Brazil. He studied biology at the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), São Paulo (1968-1971), and earned a BSc in Biology (1971), a MSc (1974) and a PhD in Zoology (1979). Since 1975, he has been working as a researcher and staff member in the "Departamento de Zoologia, Instituto de Biociências" USP, where became Full Professor in 2000. He teaches courses on invertebrate zoology, entomology and systematics for graduate and postgraduate degrees, and supervises programs for postgraduate students –MSc and PhD levels – and postdoctors. Since 2001, he is an Associate Curator in the Curculionoidea collection of the Museu de Zoologia – USP. Formerly Director of the Museu de Zoologia – USP from 2006-2009. His general research interests center on systematics, bionomics and evolution of Coleoptera (Insecta), with two main branches. 1-Systematics and evolution of Curculionidae and Torridincolidae from the Neotropical Region. Researches on taxonomy of Neotropical weevils are conducted from a phylogenetic perspective and focusing on the interactions with their host plants. 2- Studies of immature stages of Coleoptera, including natural history, aiming to improve the knowledge of larvae and pupae of Coleoptera, chiefly from the Neotropical Region. Joint projects are developed mainly with Drs Cleide Costa and Sônia Casari (“Museu de Zoologia USP”), Sergio Ide (“Instituto Biológico, SP”), and eventually with other collaborators. The studies are intended both as a means of taxonomic identification and as a basis for phylogenetic work.
