Diagnosis

The genus Brochis is diagnosed by a reduced inner expansion of the second infraorbital bone; and by having 10-18 branched rays in the dorsal fin. This genus can be further distinguished from other callichthyids by the presence of small lateral cornua on the anterior tip of the mesethmoid.

Brochis multiradiatus is apparently widely distributed in the Amazon basin, while Brochis britskii is found in the rio Paraguay system. Brochis splendens appears to dwell both in the Amazon and the Paraguay drainages.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
