Cylindrosella
Cylindrosella dampfi
W. Eugene HallIntroduction
Cylindrosella currently contains one described (Barber, 1924) and two undescribed species found in North America. The type species, C. dampfi, was collected on a polypore fungus, Fomes pinicola, at 3200 meters in Mexico.
Ptiliid species generally possess varying spermathecal designs, but striking similarities exist between C. dampfi and an undescribed species occurring in southwestern United States.
Characteristics
Cylindrosella can be separated from other ptiliid genera by the elongated, moderately narrow form (Barber 1924, Dybas 1990). Body length can be up to five times as long as wide. The mesosternal process is directed posteriorly, and generally 'arrowhead-shaped.'
The larva illustrated by Barber (1924: plate 7) as possibly representing Cylindrosella more than likely belongs to the Staphylinidae (Dybas, 1976:50). Ptiliid larvae lack eyespots (exception Nossidium), and larvae of Nanosellinae do not posses urogomphi.
Geographical Distributions
Cylindrosella dampfi is currently known only from the type locality in Mexico. Two undescribed species occur in the western (Arizona, New Mexico) and eastern (Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky) regions of the United States, associated with the fungus Fomitopsis pinicola.
