Introduction
The relationship of this tribe to other carabids is unclear. A number of authors have placed it near Trachypachidae, based in part on the laterally extended metacoxae in adults (Darlington, 1933; Lindroth 1960, 1961). More recently Gehringia has been proposed to be related to some lineage of "basal carabid" (e.g. Bell, 1967). On the other hand, Gehringia shares with bembidiine carabids a reduced terminal palp article, suggesting a possible relationships between the two groups (Darlington, 1933; Hammond, 1979; Erwin, 1984, 1985).
