Containing group: Carabidae

Introduction

The relationship of this tribe to other carabids is unclear. A number of authors have placed it near Trachypachidae, based in part on the laterally extended metacoxae in adults (Darlington, 1933; Lindroth 1960, 1961). More recently Gehringia has been proposed to be related to some lineage of "basal carabid" (e.g. Bell, 1967). On the other hand, Gehringia shares with bembidiine carabids a reduced terminal palp article, suggesting a possible relationships between the two groups (Darlington, 1933; Hammond, 1979; Erwin, 1984, 1985). The bembidiine-like maxillary palp can be seen in the following figure:

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
