Inopus is native to Australia, Tasmania, and Papua New Guinea. The larvae of I. rubriceps and I. flavus are pests of sugar cane in Australia. I. rubriceps has been introduced to New Zealand and California, where it is a turf pest. Its range in California is currently expanding (Woodley 2001).
