Introduction
Nephanes currently consists of 12 genera, most of which are dark brown or black in coloration. Specimens have been collected in compost, stable sweepings, leaf litter and tree holes (Dybas, 1990). In the arid deserts of Arizona, Nephanes is known to inhabit rotting cactus, in particular saguaros.
Characteristics
Nephanes can be separated from other acrotrichines by the straight mesosternal collar, and posterior angles of pronotum more rounded than those of Acrotrichis. In most species, antennal segments 5-8 are constricted at their apex.
