Figure. The schematic drawing on the left of an arm hook defines the hook terminology. This hook shows only the horny structure that comprises the hook itself; the fleshy sheath, stalk and base are not included.

Figure. The hooks on the tentacular club of this preserved Ancistrocheirus are enclosed in a fleshy sheath, as are all hooks. The sheath presumably secretes the hook and, perhaps, protects the squids arms from becoming accidently impaled. The broad circular bases of some hooks (see arrow) with their short, narrow stalks allows these hooks to swivel rather than tilt. Photograph by R. Young.
