Containing group: Arhopalini

Introduction

The genus Arhopala contains some 200 species, distributed from India to Japan to Australia and the Solomon Islands. There is substantial disagreement among authors as to circumscription and synonymy of many species. Larvae are attended by ants.

Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships

Species groups are based on classifications by Eliot (1992) and Parsons (1999). The alphabetical list of species at the bottom represents taxa not mentioned in either of those works. Megens et al. (2004) published a molecular phylogenetic hypothesis for 27 Arhopala species, but this represents a tiny fraction of the diversity of the group and the resultant trees do little more than corroborate some (but not all) of the species groups indicated in the list above.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
