Bembidion alaskense
David R. MaddisonAdult External Characteristics
Members of this species are small or medium size (most specimens less than 6 mm long), with elytral mirrors on intervals 3 and 5, in some specimens on interval 4, and no distinct mirrors on intervals 6 and 7. The pronotum lacks a long basilateral carina, and is without a midlateral seta. The ventroapical setae of protarsomere 4 are widely separated; lateral projection on male protarsomere 3 lacking.
Comparison with Related Species
Compare with:
Distinguished from B. argenteolum by smaller size, duller luster, and generally darker appendages. The silver spots in B. alaskense are usually larger, extended onto intervals 2 and 4, with the seta in the spot located nearer the center of the spot (in B. argenteolum the setae are located nearer the anterior edge). Ventroapical setae of protarsomere 4 widely separated. For more detail, see B. argenteolum.
B. alaskense is duller, with much wider third elytral intervals, than B. semenovi.
From B. lapponicum and B. carinula, B. alaskense is distinct in lacking the midlateral pronotal seta, and more definite mirrors on interval 5 (and generally also 4).
Geographic Variation
Southern Alaskan specimens are somewhat darker and shinier than specimens from northern Alaska; Lake Baikal specimens are larger than Alaskan specimens.
Geographic Distribution
Known from Alaska, from the Alaska Peninsula to the Brooks Range; also in the region of Lake Baikal.
Habitat
On sandy river and lake shores. At Lake Brooks, Alaska, found on dark, volcanic sand, as shown in the following photograph:
