Bembidion punctatostriatum
David R. MaddisonAdult External Characteristics
A large, wide, shiny species. Mirrors are present on interval 3, but not on 6 and 7. The prothorax has a wide base, with only slightly rounded sides, and with a midlateral seta. The humeral margin of elytra is prominent, long, and extends inward to the fifth elytral stria.
Comparison with Related Species
Compare with:
The size and shape of the shiny adults make it distinctive enough so that it is unlikely to be confused with other species. From the somewhat similar B. lorquinii distinguished externally by the wider body and presence of midlateral pronotal seta.
Geographic Distribution
The range of this species is disjunct, as it is apparently absent from the center of North America. From New Brunswick and Maine south to Kentucky and Arkansas; in the west from Saskatchewan and Montana, to the Yukon.
Habitat
On barren sand banks of rivers and lakes. Adults are found on the drier areas of the sand banks, occasionally at a considerable distance from water.
Nomenclature
- Bembidium punctato-striatum Say 1823. Neotype male in MCZ.
- Bembidium sigillare Say 1834
- Bembidium stigmaticum Dejean 1831
