A genus endemic to the Cape region of South Africa. Larvae are ant-associated, and some are aphytophagous, obtaining all their nutrition from ant trophallaxis.
Several genera were synonymized by Heath (1997) in his reorganization of this complex. Most of the species in the new, more inclusive Chrysoritis (e. g., the thysbe group) were formerly included in Poecilmitis. Phylogenetic relationships among members of the oreas group and exemplars of other species groups were inferred from mitochondrial DNA sequences by Rand et al. (2000).
