Comments

This paralarva is unlike any other described (although few species have described paralarvae) and is especially distinctive in having expanded tentacular clubs. The only species of Mastigoteuthis that has slightly expanded tentacle clubs as a subadult is Idioteuthis. cordiformis but this species is not known from the Indian Ocean.

Distribution

Type locality: Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia at ca. 08.1°N, 56.1°E, 212 m depth. This species is known only from the type specimen.

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
