Eueides heliconioides
Margarita Beltrán and Andrew V. Z. BrowerIntroduction
A geographically variable species with many forms that are surprisingly good mimics of red-and-yellow rayed Heliconius species
Geographical Distribution
Eueides heliconioides is distributed in the Upper Amazonian regions of Peru and Bolivia (Brown, 1981).Habits
E. heliconioides occurs from 200 to 1,800 m in forest clearings. Usually individuals fly rapidly in the middlestory (Brown, 1981).Geographical Races
- Eueides heliconioides heliconioides C. & R. Felder 1861 - Peru and Bolivia
- Eueides heliconioides eanes Hewitson 1861 - northern Peru, western Rondônia
- Eueides heliconioides koenigi H. & R. Holzinger 1993 - Rio Ucayali, Peru
There are additional names for various phenotypes deemed by Lamas (2004) to be infrasubspecific and synonymous with a polytypic nominate subspecies, as follows:
- Eueides eanes ab. eanides Stichel 1903
- Eueides eanes ab. farragosa Stichel 1903
- Eueides eanes ab. aides Stichel 1903
- Eueides eanes ab. riffarthi Stichel 1903
- Eueides eanes ab. felderi Stichel 1903
- Eueides eanes ab. pluto Stichel 1903
Holzinger & Holzinger (1993) suggest that at least some of these have discrete distributions, particularly in the upper reaches of a number of Peru's major rivers where they are sympatric and appear to be involved in mimicry with various Altinote species. These may eventually warrant elevation to subspecific status.
