Introduction
A small genus of aposematically-colored, black butterflies with red or orange transverse forewing bands. This rare (or infrequently observed) genus is distributed in mid-elevation rainforest on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Hall and Willmott (2010) suggest that L. suberra may belong in a separate genus, based on its divergent wing pattern and morphology. Hall and Wilmott hypothesize that species of Lucillella may be a Batesian mimic of Hades hecamede (Euselasiinae). Various Actinote spp., Arctiidae, Geometridae and Dioptinae are also potential candidates for this mimicry complex.Nomenclature
Most species of this genus were originally described in Lucilla Hewitson 1870, which was subsequently discovered to be a junior homonym.
