This member of the black/blue-and-yellow Heliconius mimicry group (e. g., H. sara, H. wallacei, H. doris) is widespread in the Amazon Basin, Venezuela and the Guianas.Characteristics
Early stages: Eggs are white and approximately 1 x 0.7 mm (h x w). Females usually place 20 to 100 eggs on growing shoots of the host plant. Caterpillars are gregarious (Brown, 1981).
Geographical Distribution
Neruda metharme is distributed in the Amazon Basin. The map below shows an approximate representation of the geographic distribution of this species. Habits
N. metharme occurs from sea level to 1,100 m in deep forests. Usually individuals fly slowly and in the middlestory (Brown, 1981).
Hostplant: N. metharme larvae feed primarily on plants from the genera Dilkea and Mitostemma (Brown, 1981).
