Notobatrachus degiustoi
David CannatellaIntroduction
Notobatrachus degiustoi is a Middle Jurassic (155-170 million years old) frog known from several well-preserved specimens from the La Maltilde Formation in Santa Cruz Province, Patagonia, Argentina. Most of the specimens are 100-120 mm in snout-vent length, although some reach 150 mm.
Phylogenetic Position of Notobatrachus degiustoi
The phylogenetic analysis of Báez and Basso (ms) and Cannatella (1985) placed Notobatrachus as the sister-group of living frogs (Anura). Estes and Reig (1973) proposed that it might be more closely related to Leiopelma.
Ford and Cannatella (1993) defined Anura as a node-based name for the ancestor (most recent) of living frogs and all its descendants. Therefore, Notobatrachus may or may not be part of Anura, depending on whether it is the sister-group of Anura or more closely related to Leiopelma.
