Note: this taxon list is still under construction. It does not yet contain all known Other New World Acantheae subgroups.

Only species sampled by McDade et al. (2005) are included in the list above.  There are additional described species of AphelandraGeissomeria, Encephalosphaera, Neriacanthus, and Rhombochlamys that likely belong here as well.  Note that one species of Aphelandra, A. verticillata, is part of the Stenandrium Clade, as is one species of Neriacanthus, N. purdieanus.

Containing group: Acantheae

Introduction

All other New World members of Acantheae are part of a large, poorly resolved clade that includes Neriacanthus (except Jamaican N. purdieanus which is part of the Stenandrium clade), Rhombochlamys (2 species), Encephalosphaera (3 species), Geissomeria (15 species), and the large and morphologically diverse genus Aphelandra (180 species). Molecular data suggest the existence of a number of subclades but relationships among these are poorly resolved by the data that we assembled for McDade et al. (2005) and that form the basis of the information presented here for Acantheae.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
