Habitat

Brachoria hendrixsoni specimens were collected during the day (11:00, Houston Valley locality) in a forest comprising hemlock, maple, and sycamore trees.  Individuals were found beneath layers of decomposing leaf material about 10 m south of Gum Spring Branch.  No other xystodesmids were encountered sympatrically at this locality.  Note: Individuals of B. hendrixsoni may be confused in the field with Apheloria virginiensis corrugata and Cherokia georgiana latassa due to similarity in color patterns and overlap in distribution.

Distribution

Brachoria hendrixsoni occurs in the Blue Ridge Moutains in northeastern Tennessee.  It has been recorded from seven localities in northeastern Tennessee, from eastern Cocke County northeast to Sullivan and Johnson counties.  The closest known Brachoria species, B. evides, occurs about 21 air km north in the cedars woods of Greeneville, Greene County, Tennessee.

Conservation status

Brachoria hendrixsoni is threatened by habitat loss due to agriculture (especially growing demand for paper products), coal mining, development, and the invasion of exotic species.

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
