Introduction

A mainly Holarctic genus that extends into southeast Asia and ranges to Australia. Due to extensive geographical variation and seasonal polyphenism, there is a good deal of disagreement among authors about the circumscription of species, particularly for the argiolus complex. Lamas (2004), for example, views all the North American species to be part of a Holarctic C. argiolus, while others restrict that name to the Palearctic populations. The names of narrowly-circumscribed taxa are listed here to inspire a phylogenetic analysis.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
