Introduction

Eogonatus tinro was first described but not named by Fields and Gauley (1971) then described and named by Nesis (1972). The paralarval, early juvenile and mature adult stages are not known. E. tinro is uncommon and although generally thought to be a small species, may reach a rather large size (Katugin, personal communication).

Nomenclature

Katugin, et. al. (2010) found that Gonatopsis okutanii Nesis, 1972 is a junior synonym of Eogonatus tinro Nesis, 1972. Both were described in the same paper, G. okutanii based on spent females, and E. tinro, based on young squid, but E. tinro appeared first.

Distribution

Type locality: 58°22.2'N, 174°55'W, Bering Sea, North Pacific.

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
