Introduction

A geographically variable neotropical species, the smallest in the subtribe. It ranges from Nicaragua to the Amazon Basin. Larvae feed on Urvillea ulmacea (Sapindaceae) (DeVries, 1987).

Nomenclature

For many years, it was thought that the generic name of this taxon was Callidula Hübner [1819], but the type species, Papilio pyramus Fabricius 1781 (an invalid junior homonym of Papilio pyramus Cramer 1779, a hesperiid) was incorrectly identified as a butterfly, when it is in fact a day-flying moth from the Moluccas, for which the name is valid (Callidulidae).

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
