Introduction

The genus Melinaea contains some of the largest ithomiines. The species are difficult to separate from one another due to intraspecific polymoprhism and interpsecific M?llerian mimicry. The color patterns are also shared by members of the silvaniorm Heliconius, with which Melinaea specimens are often intermingled in collections. They can easily be distingished by the size of their heads -- Melinaea spp. have small heads, and Heliconius spp. have large heads and eyes. The shape of the hindwing discal cell is also very different between the two taxa.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
