Notholaena copelandii
Copeland's Cloakfern
Carl RothfelsIntroduction
Often treated as N. candida var. copelandii, Notholaena copelandii differs from N. candida in morphology (Hall, 1950), farina chemistry (Wollenweber, 1984; Wollenweber et. al 2001), geographic range, and plastid DNA sequences (Rothfels et al., 2008). I thus follow Windham (1993a) and Mickel and Smith (2004) in treating them as distinct species.
Notholaena copelandii is a species of southern Texas and northeastern Mexico, where it occurs on limestone cliffs and outcrops.
Characteristics
The morphological characters distinguishing N. copelandii from N. candida include: basal pinnae shape (a single exaggerated basioscopic pinnule on N. copelandii; pinnules gradually tapering in length in N. candida); leaf tip shape (abruptly tapered vs. gradually tapered); and rhizome scales (ciliate vs. slightly toothed). Notholaena copelandii is also similar to N. jacalenis, but the later species has much narrower leaves.
