Introduction
This is a widespread Mexican species, found also on Jamaica, of diverse dry rocky habitats (typically scrubby, forested, or otherwise somewhat sheltered). I treat it here (following Windham, 1993a) as distinct from the allied N. nealleyi, a species of northern Mexico and Texas.
Characteristics
The highly divided (bipinnate-pinnatifid) leaf blades without scales beneath distinguish this species from other congeners with narrowly elliptic leaves (but see N. nealleyi). The long bristle-like hairs on the leaf blades and stalks give N. schaffneri a rather startled gestalt.
