Containing group: Eudaminae

Introduction

A neotropical genus of 26(,/-) large and often showy species ranging from Mexico to northern Argentina. Austin and Mielke (2008) ascribe their scarcity in collections to crepuscular habits, and the tendency to be encountered only in association with swarming army ants. Some Porphyrogenes species are so sexually-dimorphic that males and females remain unassociated, and the females have been described as separate taxa. The list above contains names of several taxa based on female holotypes (P. passalus, P. virgatus, P. eudemus) that may eventually prove to be synonymous with names based on types of the opposite sex.

Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships

Austin & Mielke (2008) provide a key, but no phylogenetic hypothesis for the genus.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
