Characteristics
Cataulacus shares the following synapomorphies with the Cephalotini (Bolton 2003):- Abdominal segment III with tergosternal fusion
- Tergite of abdominal segment IV hypertrophied, comprising entire dorsum of gaster in dorsal view
- Ileum dilated and thickened to accommodate microorganisms
- Antennal sockets very widely separated
- Antennal scrobe present that extends below the eye; scape, when laid back, passes below the eye
- Slight sexual dimorphism
- Male volsella without cuspis
