Containing group: Engaeus

Types

Holotype, Museum of Victoria, Melbourne J14733 (Intersexed); allotype, Museum of Victoria, Melbourne J14734 (Intersexed reproductively active female); paratypes, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart G3226 (Intersexed), G3227 (Intersexed reproductively active female).

Type Locality

Headwaters of creek, spring, in wet sclerophyll forest, at Ryton Junction on Midland Highway, about 30 km due south of Morwell, Eastern Strzelecki Ranges, Victoria.

Distribution

E. rostrogaleatus is restricted to the high altitude regions of Eastern Strzelecki Ranges in South Gippsland, Victoria. All sites at which it was collected were over 400 m altitude.

Habitat

At the type locality, a small creek had its origins as a spring in wet sclerophyll forest dominated by mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans) and with abundant tree ferns. The local topography consisted of a flood-bed or seepage 2-4 m wide, across which water from the spring trickled. The banks of the flood-bed were steep and led to the hill-slopes. Burrows of E. rostrogaleatus were found either in the flood-bed, where they were very shallow and almost without a descending or vertical component, or immediately adjacent to the flood-bed in the banks where vertical tunnels of these burrows often descended to the flood-bed level. The yellow soils were composed of a heavy clay component.

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
