Containing group: Engaeus

Types

Syntypes, Museum of Victoria, Melbourne J905 (2 intersexed), J3939 (3 intersexed), J3941 (intersexed), J3942 (4 intersexed). Possible syntype, Australian Museum, Sydney P13216 (intersexed).

Type Locality

Croydon.

Distribution

E. sericatus has been found in Western Victoria where it can be collected from some of the creeks south or south-east of the Otway Ranges, more abundantly between the Otway Ranges and Warrnambool, in some creeks south and south-west of Ballarat (north of Lake Corangamite) and between Port Fairy and Portland. Populations west and east of Warrnambool appear to be disjunct but this gap will probably be closed with further collecting. The region around Lake Corangamite was searched extensively without finding evidence of freshwater crayfish and the gap in the distribution around this lake therefore appears to be a real absence rather than an artefact of lack of collections.

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
