Carl RothfelsIntroduction
Notholaena neglecta, a species of limestone rocks and cliffs, enters the United States in extreme southeastern Arizona (S1) and the Big Bend area of Texas (S2; NatureServe, 2008); it is otherwise limited to northcentral Mexico (overall, G4; NatureServe, 2008). In the United States, this species is an apogamous triploid (the sporophytes have three complete sets of chromosomes rather than the typical two sets, and produce unreduced spores, which develop into triploid gametophytes, which then produce a new sporophyte directly from their vegetative tissue, without sexual reproduction) but at least some populations in Mexico are sexual diploids (Windham, 1993a).
Characteristics
This species protrudes its small pentagonal leaves from rock crevices in a manner most reminiscent of N. californica. Mickel and Smith (2004) note that N. neglecta also resembles small individuals of N. candida, but has more divided pentagonal leaves and yellow farina.
