Characteristics
A large neotropical genus of big, showy skippers. The genus has been the subject of some controversy lately due to the apparent discovery of hidden diversity ("ten species in one") based upon DNA barcodes of Astraptes fulgerator from Guanacaste, Costa Rica (Hebert et al. 2004; Brower 2006). At this time, the nine other "species" remain formally undescribed.
